Security Guard Training in Manitoba

In Manitoba, all Security Guards must be licensed under the Private Investigators and Security Guards (PISG) Act.  Under this Act, all Security Guards are required to complete the 40-hour mandatory Manitoba Security Guard Training Program and be eligible to apply for a Security Worker licence in the province. 

The cost is $30.

Security licence 1/year for those who meet the licensing requirements and Certificate of Completion of the Manitoba Security Guard Training Program (MSGTP) and/or Private Investigator 1/year who meet the licensing requirements and experience and/or Certificate of Completion of an accredited Investigator Training Program.

Dual Licence 1/year issued for those who qualify for both security and investigator licence.

Yes! The online training is the equivalent to the classroom training but can be done in your own time, whenever and wherever you can get to the internet.

Online course fee $200 ($25 Manitoba Justice fee inc), virtual exam fee $30, criminal record checks $100, 1/year security licence fee $30 = approximately $360

The course is 40-hours.  If you take it online it could take 1-2 weeks, plus 1 week after you take the exam. Processing of your application (by the Registrar) may take as long as 2-3 weeks, so the earlier you apply the better.

There are two exam fees – Manitoba Justice $25 exam fee plus the eProctor Canada $30 exam fee. The $25 Manitoba Justice fee is included for the first exam attempt.  The student is responsible for the eProctor.

If you are unsuccessful, you will have to pay $25 Manitoba Justice fee plus $30 eProctor exam fee.

There is a $25 government exam fee plus a $30 VIRTUAL eProctor fee. The first $25 government exam fee is included with your course fee.  VIRTUAL EXAMS are scheduled independently through eProctor Canada.  The VIRTUAL EXAM fee is $30 plus tax is due when you book the exam. 

The student is responsible to create an eProctor account, pay the fees and schedule an exam date.  If you NO SHOW or do not pass with 75% or above, you will have to pay an additional $25 government exam fee and $30 fee with eProctor Canada.

Once you complete the online or classroom course, you will need to email an Exam Request to your training provider. An email with instructions will be sent to you regarding how to setup your exam with eProctor Canada.

Exams will be conducted virtually online. VIRTUAL EXAMS are scheduled through eProctor Canada.  There is an additional exam fee of $30 plus tax.  Upon completion of the course, individuals must send in an EXAM request to be added to the Virtual exam list.  The student will then receive an email with instructions. The student is responsible to create an eProctor account, pay the fees and schedule an exam date.  If you NO SHOW or do not pass with 75% or above, you will have to pay an additional $30 fee with eProctor Canada.

All in-person Gov’t exams are suspended due to Covid-19. The Exam Dates are SUSPENDED by Manitoba Justice which are generally held at the Auditorium (Basement Level) of the Norquay Building, 401 York Street OR 12th Floor Boardroom, 405 Broadway, Manitoba. Government exams will be conducted virtually online using eProctor Canada. Virtual exams require you to have access to a strong internet connection, private room, computer, laptop, mic. 

Students must send a REQUEST to be added to the VIRTUAL exam list.  The student will then receive an email with instructions from our STING exam administrator. Students must read and follow the instructions that are sent to them as well on the eProctor Canada website.

You must achieve 75% or above to receive a Certificate of Completion.

It takes about 5-7 business days to receive your results and Certificate of Completion.

After you take the virtual exam, the exam is reviewed by Manitoba Justice then results will be sent to your training provider.  Your training provider will then email you results and Certificate of Completion.

There is a zero tolerance cheating policy. If you are caught cheating, then you will be expelled from the exam and not permitted to continue. 

You have up to 3 times to write the exam. The first $25 fee is included in your course fee.  You will have to pay the $25 Manitoba Justice fee in addition to the eProctor Canada fee. If after 3 attempts you are not successful, you are required to retake the training program again as required by Manitoba Justice.

You will receive an email with your official exam results and Certificate of Completion within 5-7 business days of completing your exam.

No. Once you take the 40-hour course and pass the government exam, you do not have to retake the course again.  You have to submit a renewal application with a new photo, ID, criminal record checks, application form and payment. 

Yes.  A Temporary 6-month licence to use while you complete your training program. This licence is temporary and issued one time only.  You must include a letter from your training provider confirming you are enrolled in the course. The cost is $30.

If you have a criminal record or have been charged, your application for a Manitoba security guard licence may not be approved. The decision is up to the Registrar of The Private Investigators and Security Guards Act.

If you have been charged or a suspect of an investigation, the Registrar of The Private Investigators and Security Guards Program may put your licence under review and suspend or revoke your licence pending outcome of investigation or trial.

The Compliant Policy outlines the complaint process. A security guard must abide by the Code of Conduct. If a security guard is found to be in breach of the provincial Code of Conduct (breaks the law, uses excessive force, behaves in an inappropriate manner, etc.) could be the subject of an investigation and may result in possible charges, civil litigation, security licence being suspended/revoked and/or termination.

While batons are not considered prohibited weapons, security guards and private investigators should not use or carry batons, truncheons, nightsticks, billy clubs or any similar item as a weapon. Possessing or using this equipment could place an individual in violation of the Criminal Code.

No, individuals licensed under The Private Investigators and Security Guards Act may not carry any type of restricted weapon.

The use of handcuffs, although not specifically prohibited, should be closely monitored by your employer. As a general rule, only a minimum level of force may be used to restrain a person being lawfully placed under arrest. You must know that any other application of force is an unjustified assault and may lead to a charge under the Criminal Code.

No, security guards and private investigators are prohibited from the possession/use of pepper spray as it is a prohibited weapon under the Criminal Code.
