Mystery Shopper to Private Investigator Program
Interested in becoming a mystery shopper, security guard OR always dreamed of becoming a private investigator in Canada? Working with SEGI has its benefits – we are to help you get certified, gain the necessary skills to do the job and gain valuable experience in the field. SEGI’s Mystery Shopper to Private Investigator Program can help you make that dream come true.
While you complete all three levels of training you will get paid to do mystery shops in your area. Once complete, you apply for a Security Guard and/or Private Investigator license and work in your province – BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, Canada.

Step 1: Sign up a Mystery Shopper with SEGI
You must be signed up as a shopper with Sting to be enrolled in Shopper to PI program. You will enter your contact details, answer all questions, upload resume, photo and be able to browse “open opportunities” in your area. These are assignments you will be paid for as a mystery shopper contractor. After you sign up, you will be required to complete all Mystery Shopper training certifications including:
- Complete Mystery Shopper Level 1&2 Programs (free)
- Complete COVID-19 Prevention & Control (free)
- Complete at least 20 assignments (paid)
Step 2: Complete Basic Security Training in your province
Basic Security Training (BST) is a 40-hour online course that is required for those wishing to become licenced security professionals in your province. We offer accredited basic security training across Western Canada. Once you complete the online basic security training course and government exam, you will be eligible to apply for a SECURITY guard licence in your province.
Step 3: Complete Accredited Investigator Training program
Professional Investigator Training is a 60-hour program and is intended to instill course participants with knowledge and skill sets in Professionalism and Ethics, Health and Safety, Law and the Canadian Legal System, Use of Force, Investigations, Communications and Report Writing, Specialized Investigations, Business of Investigations. Upon successful completion of the course and government exam, individuals in BC will qualify for a private investigator under-supervision licence where they must complete 2000 hours under the direct supervision of a fully licenced private investigator.
* Sting is willing to work out monthly payment plans for the training/exam fees for our evaluators if this is something you may require.
We will work with you through every step of the way to help get you licensed. Our courses are accredited as the equivalent for licensing by the Justice Institute of BC and are completed online, in your own time.
