Moving from Ontario to Alberta and need to transfer your Security Licence?
If you’re moving from Ontario to Alberta and need to transfer your security licence, follow these simple steps to apply for a Security Licence in Alberta:
Step 1: Complete the Application
Download and complete the Application for Individual Licence form from the Security Programs website.
Step 2: Check Your Eligibility
- Canadian Citizen/Permanent Resident: Submit your application at a registry office offering Security Programs services and you will receive a temporary security licence.
- Non-Canadian Citizen: Mail your application, passport, and permit to Security Programs in Edmonton.
Step 3: Provide Proof of Training
- Submit your Ontario security certificate and active licence.
- If you can’t provide these, you’ll need to complete the Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) course for $149.

Step 4: Gather Required Documents
Include the following documents with your application:
- Canadian photo ID
- Approved training course certificate, or
- Copy of active licence from a Canadian province or territory
- You must use the newest form and sign the labour mobility section stating that you are currently in your previous province.
- If you do NOT have a current licence in another province, or do not use the correct form etc., you must provide proof of training with exam results from the government of that province.
- 40-hour baton use-of-force training certificate (if applicable)
- Police information and criminal record check (CPIC, local database and vulnerable sector check)
- Dated passport-size colour photo
Step 5: Submit Your Application
You can submit your application in two ways:
In Person (ONLY PR + CANADIAN CITIZENS):
- Take your completed application to a registry office and pay the fees:
- $100 for security service licensing
- $160 for dual security service and investigator licensing
- $9 service charge
- If approved, you’ll receive a temporary licence valid for 60 days.
- Take your completed application to a registry office and pay the fees:
By Mail:
- Include your completed form, documents, and payment:
- Cheque (payable to Government of Alberta) or credit/debit card receipt
- Include your completed form, documents, and payment:

Online payment is NOT accepted at the registry.
By mail

- payment or online payment receipt for:
- $100 security service licensing fee, or
- $160 dual security service and investigators licensing fee
- Pay the licensing fee with a cheque (made payable to the Government of Alberta):
- Pay by credit or debit online: print and mail the receipt with your completed application

Step 6: After you Apply
If your application is approved, a temporary licence valid for 60 days will be emailed to you. Your licence card will be mailed to the address in your application.
